Educational Grant Program for Graduate Degree

Introduction:

Goal of the Program is to identify and support best students in finance and economics, who have bright leadership skills and aspired to gain knowledge. Final goal is to form financial and economical elite of Kazakhstan that would contribute to developing and building up market mechanisms and liberal democratic society.

Institutions’ and universities’ graduates and young specialists wanting to obtain master’s degree from London School of Economics or Harvard Business School are eligible to apply.

Educational Grants of the Yerzhan Tatishev Foundation awards based on contest results that are focused on leadership skills of candidate, academic knowledge and success as well as personal potentials.

Before filling applications for Educational Grant Program, please read carefully criteria, rules and regulations of the procedures provided here. If provided information is not appropriate or wrong filled forms, those applications are not going to be considered for review.

Program Regulations

  1. Educational Grant Program of the Yerzhan Tatishev Foundation (further Foundation) provides opportunity for Graduate students to obtain master’s degree in the fields of finance, economics and banking at London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) or in Harvard Business School (HBS).
  2. This program provides opportunity to study for citizens of Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Ukraine.
  3. For Educational Grant for Graduate Program eligible students are those successfully enrolled in LSE or HBS for Master’s Degree. All questions related to enrollment process in LSE and HBS should be referred directly to the LSE and HBS.
  4. Only those candidates that will submit enrollment document to abovementioned Schools will be invited to take part in last round.
  5. To enter the abovementioned schools applicants should follow instructions of that school. For more detailed information see official sites of these schools: www.lse.ac.uk for LSE and www.hbs.edu for HBS.
  6. Educational Grant is provided for full period of study.
  7. Selection process of candidates for Graduate Program includes three rounds:
    1 round – candidates should independently apply for enrollment to the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) or Harvard Business School (HBS) and receive admission.
    2 round – at this stage enrolled students in LSE/HBS will be selected by Foundation to provide educational grant. Based on results of the second round, short list of the finalists will be formed.
    3 round – final consideration and approval of the list of the finalists by Board of Trustees of the Foundation.
  8. Relatives of the Foundation Staff and members of the Board are not eligible to apply. Relatives being: parents, children, uncles and aunties, siblings and cousins, nephews and nieces.
  9. Number of educational grants and budget are defined by Board of Trustees of the Foundation annually.
  10. Educational Grant is paid out partly, once in a year and can be prolonged to another year if student shows academic excellence and is active in public life.
  11. Educational Grant covers only study years at university. If student takes academic break, drops school, transfers to universities including under exchange program, grant payment is going to be stopped.
  12. The Foundation can request from the University additional information and documentations concerning grades of the student (GPA – grade point average) and any other information on changes related to grantees.
  13. The Foundation has the right to double check provided information and dismisses any student for information falsification.
  14. The Program does not discriminate applicants based on race, religion, sexual orientation and incompetence. The selection procedure conducted on merit basis and open to anybody responding to the Program criteria.
  15. The Foundation has a right to not provide information on reasoning and motives for decisions taken on candidate’s selection in the Education Grant Program.
  16. The Foundation does not provide information and consultation on enrolment and admission to LSE and HBS.

Visa support for Graduate Program students

Applicants arrive to the country of study with student visa. Applicants must be eligible to all visa requirements and by the end of education program have no right to stay in the country. Requests for prolongation and renewal of visa are not acceptable.

Dependents

The Yerzhan Tatishev Foundation does not provide any support to family members of applicants.

Applicants responsibility

Grantees should keep up academic excellence and standards of enrolled university and should complete studies in given years. Not meeting academic and professional requirements of the universities can be a reason to stop grant support.

Selection criteria for Educational Grant for Graduate Program

Selection process for Educational Grant of the Foundation based on following criteria:

Leadership potential

Applicants to Educational Grant should have exclusive leadership skills demonstrated in various areas of life. Leadership potentials of applicants assessed by selection committee based on information about applicant’s experience and/or achievements in school or work exposed in essay, also presented in recommendations letters by teachers, supervisors or instructors.

Academic excellence

Conformity to this criterion is proved by enrollment document to the selected university.

Personal characteristics

Selection committee considers personal characteristics that can help to understand applicants’ capacity to achieve professional and career goals. Candidates should carry high moral and ethical values and be respected by people around.

Criteria points:

  1. Motivation and leadership skills (based on essay and interview) – 30 points;
  2. Financial situation – 25 points;
  3. Academic excellence – 25 points;
  4. Awards for achievements– 5 points;
  5. Good recommendation letters – 5 points.

Criteria of comparison:

  1. Active participation in social and public life – 5 points;
  2. Region* (applicants from regions have advantage before those from Almaty or Astana) – 5 points;

* This criteria only for citizens of Kazakhstan.

List of documents required for the Educational Grant for Graduate Degree

To apply for the undergraduate grant program there should be submitted following documents:

  1. Completed Application form;
  2. Copy of first page of identification document such as passport or national ID;
  3. Essay. Essay should include (a) short autobiography with description of your strength and weaknesses, professional and career goals, and public activities, (b) statement on why you are interested to apply and how you are willing to apply gained knowledge;
  4. Notarially certified copy of High School graduation certificate(s);
  5. Enrollment document to the selected university (original) with official translation to Russian and Kazakh;
  6. Resume;
  7. Recommendation letters (not less then 2);
  8. Documents verifying difficult financial situation of an applicant5;

5List of the documents required for identification of applicant’s socio-economical status of the applicant and his/her family is provided below.

Documents should be filed in the same order as it is listed. Official translation of the documents (if necessary) to Kazakh or Russian must be provided. Applicant cannot translate and certify documents him-/her-self.

Documents can be submitted in Kazakh or Russian languages. Documents should not be sent by e-mail or fax. Also, documents cannot be laminated or interlaced. Documents are not going to be returned.

All information should be printed or written in print with dark blue ink. Bind documents as it is listed above. It is required to submit one original file of documents and two its copies with all attachments and additional documentations.

Deadline of for application form: June 30, 2008 till 5:00pm. (Almaty time)

Completed application form with supporting documents should be brought to the office of the Foundation or post it with note “To Educational Grant” to following address:

Selection process for Graduate Program

For obtaining educational grant for Graduate Degree in London School of Economics and Political Sciences or in Harvard Business School, applicants should apply to Yerzhan Tatishev Foundation only after submitted all documents and receiving admission.

  1. Selection rules and regulations for Educational Grant Program, amount of grants to be distributed and budget need to be approved by The Board of the Foundation– not later than December 5, 2007.
  2. Announcement of educational grants program – from December 5 till 10, 2007.
  3. Receiving the applications for Graduate Grant Program till June 30, 2008 till 5pm.
  4. Short list of Graduate Program semi-finalists is formed– by July 14, 2008.
  5. Confirmation of list of finalists by the Board of Trustees – by July 31, 2008.
  6. Approval of the list of the finalists by the Board of Trustees of the Foundation and announcement of the finalists – grantees of the Program in Mass Media – till August 20, 2008.

List of documents required CONFIRMING applicant’s difficult financial situation.

  1. Copy of a state ID or birth certificate or passport for all family members/guardian *.
  2. Reference on family or copy of house book.
  3. Document from BTI (Bureau of Technical Inventory) certifying availability/absence of any real estate for all adult family members/guardians.*
  4. Document with indication of current market value of all real estate owned by any family member/guardians, if applicable (document should be issued not earlier then January 2008).
  5. Document from Traffic Authorities certifying the availability/absence of the transportation device owned by any adult family members/guardians.*
  6. Document with indication of current market value of transportation device owned by any family member/guardians, if applicable (document should be issued not earlier then January 2008).
  7. Document certifying the amount of a monthly salary/ income for the period of one year and statement from Personal Pension Account certifying pension deductions for the period from January 2007 to present for each adult family member.*
  8. Statement from Personal Pension Account certifying pension deductions for the period from January 2007 to present.
  9. If applicant or his/her parents have own business the following documents should be submitted: document certifying their registration in Tax Committee; Income Declaration for the period of January from 2007 to present.
  10. If parents/guardians are unemployed, a document from Labor and Social Care Office certifying their social status must be submitted (issued not earlier than January 2008).
  11. If there is a physically disabled family member, the medical certificate from Medical Labor Expertise Committee should be submitted.
  12. If parents are pensioners by age or disability, there must be submitted copy of pension ID and certificate from Pension Payment Center reflecting the amount of pension (the certificate from the Center should be issued not earlier than January 2008)
  13. In case of divorce, single parenthood or death of one/both parents, a documents certifying such facts must be submitted.

* It is important to submit documents on siblings of applicant younger then 21. All documents must be provided in original or certified notarially. It is acceptable to submit copies of the documents along with originals. Any applicant if provides falsified information or documents will be excluded from the Program.
The Board of Trustees of the Yerzhan Tatishev Foundation makes decision on grant awards based on following criteria: academic excellence, high leadership potential, and difficult financial conditions of an applicant. The Foundation builds selection process on basis of transparency, impartiality and objectivity.

  1. Please respond to ALL questions of the Application.
  2. Write your first name, last name and middle name fully as it is written in your Passport or ID.
  3. Please provide all possible contact information, including country code and code of your region. Provide present contact so the Foundation staff or selection committee members would be able to contact you.
  4. Do not leave empty lines.
